The Casino, Florida in the 50's
The casino was an enormously popular complex of restaurants, lounges, shops, swimming pool, cabanas and lifeguard towers on Sarasota's Lido Beach. It was designed by Ralph Twitchell and built as a WPA project. It formally opened in 1940. Sadly, it was demolished a mere 29 years later in 1969. The swimming pool is all that remains. The magnificent sea horse statues that stood as sentinels on the building's balconies were reproduced in the 1980's for the facade of the Sarasota Quay Building. The Quay too was short lived and demolished in 2007 but the sea horses were rescued and are being returned to public sites in Sarasota today.
