A Sarasota Legend

The El Vernona - John Ringling Hotel

A crown jewel of Sarasota’s past.  Built in 1926, the hotel formally opened
with a rousing affair on New Years Eve.  Sarasota’s most prominent
developer and civic leader, Owen Burns commissioned architect Dwight
James Baum to design the magical, medieval  6 story, 50,000 square foot
hotel on the shore of Sarasota’s bayfront at Tamiami Trail (Rt. 41).

It was the place to be and to be seen - the center of Sarasota’s social
scene.  In later years John Ringling North premiered circus acts in the
spectacular dining room including Captain Heyer on his steed Starless
Night.  Unis the amazing one finger equalibrist was said to have dazzled
the guests and Gargantua the Great married M’Toto in a splashy
ceremony on at least one occassion!

Today nothing but memories remain of its splendor.  The parking garage
of the Ritz Carlton Hotel has taken its place.
